HuntforMelanin is a movement focused on empowering the black woman, particularly the dark black woman. HFM was founded by Lethabo Rapoo and Noko Malatjie, two young black creatives who want nothing more but to tell raw stories experienced by black women everywhere. Black women have over the years complained of the lack of authentic African stories that tell of their day to day struggles, triumphs and duties. HFM seeks to fill that gap by creating a platform that not only celebrates the black woman, but allows her to tell her story with grace and dignity to empower other black women.
The aim is to empower black girls and instill confidence in their skin. HFM seeks to open dark skinned girls to a world where they are celebrated and have enough confidence to fill any space they have and escape the interiority complex attached to having dark skin. Representation matters and if young black girls are exposed to stories about other black women it creates an idea of significance instead of the sexist-racism that is evident in the media industry. Being black already has a negative stigma attached to it and HFM seeks to remove that stigma by documenting these stories through photography and storytelling.
